IBS with constipation is characterized by the multiple symptoms of abdominal discomfort or pain, bloating and constipation. The term "syndrome" in IBS refers to a collection of symptoms that together comprise a specific medical condition. IBS is a real medical disorder, not a vague psychological or nervous reaction to the stresses of daily life. IBS is a long-lasting condition, with recurring symptoms that may come and go over time.
Abdominal Pain or Discomfort
Abdominal discomfort or pain may range from discomfort in the abdomen to severe pain and is often relieved by a bowel movement. It may come and go, or there may be a frequently recurring tenderness in the abdominal area.
Bloating
"Bloating" refers to a feeling of excess gas or fullness in the abdomen. This symptom, which is uncomfortable and at times embarrassing, affects up to 87 percent of IBS patients.
Constipation & Changes in Bowel Habits
Constipation can include infrequent bowel movements, straining when having a bowel movement, hard or lumpy stools, or a feeling of not completely finishing a bowel movement.
